New research suggests that patients who stop using popular slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain lost weight much more quickly than those who end traditional lifestyle plans.
Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying these drugs should be cognizant of the potential of quick weight regain when the medication ends," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain implies a reversion to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of the injectable medications with older methods.
The team note that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid weight regain—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists believe the way of the injections accounts for the heightened rebound.
The injections mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "underscore the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication report a intense return of appetite.
"It felt as if a trigger that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is higher among females compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural support.
