Zak Crawley Claims Ignorance of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

England opening batter Crawley suggested he had no knowledge of comments made by skipper Ben Stokes about the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made those words in several interviews following England's defeat in the second match of the Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where England now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his message to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I needed to have done," remarked the England leader.

But, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the media with some skepticism," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes issued his "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to go two matches behind.

The team subsequently took a break to a Queensland resort in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their battle to stay in contention in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted Crawley. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we could do something special entering this game."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Harry Brook and Stokes himself – left England six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to secure an insurmountable three-nil advantage after three Tests.

A loss will extend England's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes defeat.

This series is set to be decided in just eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when Australia sealed a series win in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his immediate place in the England team, Ollie Pope appears under threat for his position in the fourth Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

In sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

A solitary other English batsman since 1900 – Dennis Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top order in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

However, the opener insisted any suggestion his teammate is being scrutinised originates with "the media" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played some really good knocks. It is talk externally. There is no discussion like that on Ollie in the camp," Crawley concluded.
